Description

An as-yet-unnamed cat-like species commissioned by :iconwolfwhisper: do not touch without permission.

Request:
"A kinda genet-ish creature, genet/snow leopard-ish cross. 3 subspecies, one that inhabits the lower mountains and into the pastures/fields, one that inhabits the higher mountain areas, into the places where there is constant snow and one on the other side of the mountain range that leads down into the semi-arid/desert in places.

Sorry, I love both critters and want to make something work that represents both, if not each of the 3 subspecies (because of climate) at least the upper mountainous area one."

Easy enough, challenge accepted!
Characteristics common all subspecies: long, wedge shaped siamese nose. Dark ears and dorsal stripe, as well as vertical striping on long ballast tails. Long body, short legs. No two patterns are alike, even among subspecies, allowing them to be used as identification like fingerprints. Main diet consists of small rodents, reptiles and birds/eggs (if available).

Subspecies 1: plains/forest type
Long and slender with short legs. Built for getting in to rodent holes and bird nests. Brown base, tan belly and bold dark brown patterns help it blend in the patchy shade of sparse forest growth. Broken, more striped patterns common in groups with little to no exposure to trees. Has the best sight of the three, allowing it to hunt equally well at all hours and spot prey that hides by holding still and being quiet.

Subspecies 2: mountain/snow type
Much more squat than is typical, with short, powerful legs for climbing crags and plowing through snow. Wide furry paws with thick pads protect the feet against cold snow and sharp rocks. Barrel chest helps deal with low oxygen environment and dark cheek patterns help cut down glare. Slate gray base with dark gray to black mottled "horseshoe" patterns and cream to white belly. Thick tail for balance. Best sense of smell, allowing it to sniff out vegetation and small mammals in wind storms too loud to hear and too low visibility to see well.

Subspecies 3: desert/savannah (says high desert but I think she had low desert in mind)
Tall and lean, with the longest legs of the three, allowing it to cover long distances in search of food and water. It has a sandy base with horizontal black spotting and a buffy belly. Large cheek spots help reduce glare. Its large ears serve two functions: one, to help regulate temperature, and two, to allow it to hear prey just under the surface in areas where heat and mirages often confuse other senses.

The thing at top right is a squirrelhopper done as a joke for WW. Youre welcome.
