Karyl were bred to hunt down and defend against dragons. They are large, muscular, aggressive and territorial. They are covered in thick, coarse hair. Each hair follicle has a special gland that produces a flame-retardant fluid to help protect them against burns, and gives them a slight sheen.

Their forepaws are large and round, like paddles, and can bludgeon a victim. All paws are oversized and have thick tufts of fur between the toes, like cats, to pad their steps, allowing them to be quite stealthy when stalking dragons. The pads themselves are thick and callous, allowing them to climb sheer, and often rugged cliff faces.

Their head is boxy and their skull is thick. They are primarily scent hounds, but despite the small size of the eyes their sight is impressive. Their jaw muscles are huge; they can snap a persons neck in a bite (forget going after the juggular!). Their second and third top, and their bottom third incisor are oversized and point forward-out-and down. They are sharp and lock together like a vice. This design, combined with the massive jaw muscles, gives them enough power to puncture most dragon skin.

They were not only bred for power, they were bred for stealth. Along with their padded feet, they tend to have mottled coloring, typically either gray or brown merle, depending on where they are typically employed. Slate gray hounds will be taken up to the mountainous caves and sunning rocks, while the splotchy browns are kept below to flush dragons out of the forests. Solid colors do occur, but they are rare and generally considered undesirable, especially those with excessive white.
