Have I ever told you guys how much I hate backgrounds? Balls.

Anyway, heres my second entry for s contest, this time under the "escape" category, with their character Vidas (my first entry is here [link]). Ive really wanted to draw the hak again, but I could never think of an appropriate situation for it. And now I had an excuse to. I originally wasnt too excited about the "capture", "escape" and "experiment" categories, because I dont find the human characters nearly as interesting as the creatures, but this scene popped into my head and I had to let it out. I cant draw "manly" characters at the best of times, so this one was annoying, but surprisingly didnt come out too bad. Sorry ladies, Vidas isnt looking as sexy as normal. I dont do sexy very well. Wow I wrote a long caption. Oh well. My other entry got lots of comments on the interesting angles. This one was a bitch to do, hak were never meant to lie down, and that right arm alone deserves all the accolades of the last picture!

Vidas couldnt stand his new cellmate. The thing put him in mind of a rabid alligator; volatile, mean, always hungry, and reeking of dead meat. Like all non-combatant creatures, the haks claws were filed and its teeth bound, but that didnt stop it from lunging at anything that moved.
After a particularly rough day of testing, both of them were exhausted and angry. Vidas couldnt think of anything except escaping, and he noticed the hak was unusually quiet and brooding as well. Vidas glanced over at the thing, and found it staring eerily back at him with its bright yellow eyes. Somehow the otherwise emotionless creature looked sad. A thought occurred to him then: maybe it was lonely. Thats stupid, he thought, hak were no more intelligent or social than pissed off iguanas, I must be going mad. But the more he looked at the thing, the more the thought nagged at him. Hak hunt in packs, live in packs, die in packs, and here this one was alone, declawed, and trapped with its only natural enemy: a human. He realized, maybe, that it wasnt so different. Surely even the simplest organisms know a bad situation, and want to get out of it. Seek the enemy of your enemy, and you may find a friend. Or maybe Ill get my face eaten
He moved toward the creature, who scrutinized his every move. He caught the creatures eye, and in that split second felt a connection. As though the same thought passed through their minds simultaneously: if they wanted to escape, they would have to go against both their natures, and work together.
With the bite force of a hyena and teeth like gearlocked sawblades, if any creature of flesh and bone could chew through chains it was this. And the only thing standing between him and that bite force was a wide rubber band. Strange to think such a simple thing could hold such power, but hed heard of similar things with alligators. Every still-rational fiber of his being screamed against undoing the band, but desperation got the best of him. If anything could get the chains off, this was the creature...or so he hoped. The trick would be to get it to bite the chains first...
